Morning & Afternoon

A day in Amsterdam

By canal boat to the Scheepvaartmuseum (our national Maritime Museum)

The chief librarian invites us to a special exposition of highlights.

In small groups we tour the museum, see the atlases and globes of the Dutch golden age, and hear tales of discovery. Board a lifesize East Indiaman, try the hammocks, fire a cannon!

Next stop

The Artis Bibliotheek | Library of the Zoo nearby.

This Library was founded in 1838 together with the Zoo. The chief curator gives us a special viewing of some of the finest books in the Netherlands on fauna and flora. And we step from the Library into the living world of the Zoo.

We will dine in the busiest place in Amsterdam.

At the Central Station, designed in 1889 by the famous architect of the Rijksmuseum, Pierre Cuypers. The monumental Grand Café Restaurant 1e Klas (the old first class waiting room), offers a view on the busy Central Station while relaxing in an atmosphere with grandeur and style.
